Of all the TLDs on the Internet I don’t think there is one that appeals to the nature of the network of networks better than .meme. But hey, let’s start from the beginning, that is to clarify what I’m talking about. For those unfamiliar with the hierarchical structure of the Internet, a TDL is a top-level domain, a top-level domain that, in order not to get lost in technical dissertations, is part of the URL that appears after the last dot of the same. In our case, for example, the TLD is MuyComputer .com.
If you’ve been using the internet for years (and especially decades), you’ll be checking development of top-level domainswhile many TLDs have appeared over the years, but also some cases of domains that ended up dying, such as domains associated with countries that no longer exist (such as .cs for Czechoslovakia) and also others such as .nato which were originally assigned to NATO , but later moved its web presence to .int, resulting in its demise in 1996.
As I say, A few TLDs have disappeared over the years, but we’ve undoubtedly seen many more pop up and all types. From the .eu domain, which is limited to the European Union, to the .love domain, focused on sites and services related to the feeling that moves the world, to name just a few examples. The proliferation of top-level domains responds both to the need to offer more options due to the difficulty of finding names that are not used in the most popular ones, and to facilitate better classification and identification of the nature of websites and services simply by looking at their URLs. ..
Well, in this slow but constant motion, Google pulled off a masterstroke today with the launch of the .meme TLD, a top-level domain that, as the name clearly suggests, is essentially focused on websites and services related to one of the most popular non-verbal communication tools on the internet, memes. Whether in its static variability or in its ever-present animated gif modality, we are without a doubt face to face with a movement that is undoubtedly heading very directly towards newspeak networks of networks.
Just take a quick look at social networks, Telegram groups and similar services, even veteran forums, to verify that the meme has been around for a while, a key element in Internet communication. So I’d almost say that I find more sense in .meme than in other TLDs that have appeared over the course of this century, and that in many cases it was more a desire for classification than a real demand. On the page announcing this launch, Google already lists some of the sites that have decided to adopt it, and the list includes reference sites such as Know Your Meme and Grumpy Cat, among others.
