What is known

As you know, Google has its own domain name registration. The new top-level domain will allow you to add “.meme” to the end of your website address instead of “.com”.

Individual early access users can already sign up for an “additional one-time fee.” This fee decreases daily until December 5, when .meme domains become publicly available at the base annual price.

There are already several sites using the .meme domain, some of which are dedicated to memes of the past:

  • Grumpycat.meme is probably the most famous cat in the world and one of the most popular memes thanks to its cute yet angry facial expressions.
  • Nyancat.meme is an animated cat with a rainbow trailing it that took the internet by storm in 2011.
  • Keyboardcat.meme, which Google calls the godfather of cat memes. It was filmed in 1984, but was relatively unknown until the internet rediscovered it in 2009.

According to sources, Google applied to launch a domain for memes years ago but will launch full registration only from December 5th. The address will be available to both individuals and legal entities, but it is worth considering that some names will cost more than similar names in another domain network.

Google already has some unusual domains on its registry, such as .dad, .boo, and even the recently introduced .ing, but this new domain is probably the most interesting.
