Santos was voted out with 311 votes in favor and 114 against, with many of his fellow Republicans joining with Democrats to reach the required two-thirds that forced him from Congress.
Since it became clear that there would be enough votes to expel him, Santos said goodbye to his few allies shook hands and left the hall before the final result was announced.
His position, representing a wealthy district on Long Island, New York, is now vacant until the election.
Santos is the sixth legislative exception in the 230-year history of the US Congress, so this is an exceptional measure that Santos’ case is unprecedented.
The first three expulsions, in 1861, were to Confederate secessionists, and the other two, in 1981 and 2002, were to congressmen convicted of crimes corruption.
Santos has not been convicted of any crime, but is charged with 13 cases of fraud, money laundering and theft of public funds – for illegally receiving $24,000 from the unemployment fund – and others.
He is also accused of embezzling more than $200,000 in campaign funds for personal use, according to an internal report from the House Ethics Committee, which is controlled by his Republican colleagues.
Among the expenses that Santos would incur with this money are purchases at Hermès, Ferragamo or Sephora, subscriptions to the OnlyFans adult content page or various trips, as well as regular payments to his credit cards.
But beyond the alleged crimes and ethical violations, what really made Santos famous in the 11 months he was a congressman were the recurring scandals usually associated with his lies.
Santos lied when he explained that his grandparents fled the Holocaust when he said that his mother survived the attack on the Twin Towers from New York or when he said he was Jewish.
Also on his resume when he said he worked on Wall Street or studied at New York University (NYU).
In addition, a trial was opened for fraud in brazilwhere he lived and where he escaped from without being brought to justice.
This all led to two previous attempts at expulsion, but Santos survived both.
On Thursday, in his final hours as congressman, the lower house held a debate that pitted Santos primarily against his party colleagues who were about to allow him to fall.
“You’re a thief,” Republican Max Miller snapped at Santos, to which Santos responded: “My colleague wants to come here and call me a thief. The same colleague who was accused of abusing women. “We all have a past.” (EFE)
