For some time now, Sony has been working on the PS5 Pro, an improved version of the PS5, the specifications of which have been the subject of many leaks and rumors, although the truth is that have not yet been confirmed. Over the past few months, we’ve seen various pieces of information with more or less credibility painting a fairly complete picture of what we can expect from this new console, but today’s is without a doubt, one of the most reliable that we have seen so far.
The PS5 Pro will be an intergenerational refresh of the PS5. This information is very important and we need to be clear about it from the beginning because that is what it meansIt will not come with a complete overhaul at the hardware level, and that won’t be a big jump compared to the said console, since it’s only reserved for the new generation. As I’ve told you on more than one occasion, the PS5 Pro will follow the approach we saw with the PS4 Pro, which means its main improvement will be in the GPU.
A new rumor has reinforced what I’ve been telling you for a long time that the PS5 Pro is yet to deliver small improvements at the level of CPU and unified memory, and that the most important will be a new GPU that will use the RDNA 3 architecture, but will theoretically have some exclusive features of the next generation of AMD graphics, known as RDNA 4.
The PS5 Pro will repeat the use of its own Zen 2 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads, but It will be able to reach a maximum frequency of 4.4 GHz. It will have 512 KB of L2 cache per core and 8 MB of L3 cache in total. If we compare it with the PS5 CPU, we see that the only important difference is the increase in the working speed, since it works at a maximum of 3.5 GHz.
In the new list of possible PS5 Pro specifications, we can also see that the said console will have 16 GB of unified GDDR6 memorythe same amount as the PS5 though it will work 18 GHz, which represents an increase of 4 GHz over the aforementioned console. This will result in a bandwidth increase of 576 GB/s.
The source does not say anything about it possible inclusion of a small block of DDR5 memory dedicated to the operating system and applications to free up GDDR6 memory, but it was something that was repeated in previous rumors and seeing what Sony did with DDR3 memory in the PS4 Pro, it’s clear that it makes a lot of sense and could be fulfilled seamlessly.
As I told you at the beginning of the article, the GPU would represent the biggest change at the hardware level. The PS5 Pro will theoretically use a new graphics engine known as Viola, which will have a total of 56 computing units activated, meaning 3,584 dual-emission shaders, 224 texturing units, 96 rasterization units and 56 second-generation cores to accelerate ray tracing. Its performance would be 28.67 TFLOPs with a maximum peak frequency (2 GHz) if we take into account this dual emission feature. Without it, its actual performance would be 14.33 TFLOPs.
We can expect a slight performance improvement at the CPU and memory level. However, with that new GPU there would be a performance boost over the PS5 up to 60% of the screenwhile in ray tracing, the source ensures that the PS5 Pro will up to twice as powerful than PS5. Sony’s new console will have all the improvements we saw in RDNA 3 at the ray tracing level and will have some RDNA 4 exclusive features such as thread rearrangement.
In addition to the details we’ve seen about the PS5 Pro’s possible specs, the source of this information highlighted the use NPU to power Sony’s new upscaling technology that will use AI to improve the final quality of said rescaling. They talk about integrated
Sony is expected to introduce the PS5 Pro September 2024, so it should launch during the same month, or in most cases sometime in the month of October. We don’t have details on its possible price, but it would be most normal for it to be placed in the range 600 euros, maximum.
