Russia and China carry out most cyber attacks on elections in the world – Canadian intelligence

The vast majority of cyber attacks on election systems and processes in the world are carried out by hackers affiliated with Russia and China.

This is stated in the report of the Center for Communications Security, the Canadian special service responsible for the cybersecurity of the federal government, Ukrinform reports.

“Since 2021, state-sponsored cybercriminals affiliated with Russia and China continue to carry out the majority of foreign election-related cybercriminal activities,” the document states.

It is stated that Russian and Chinese hackers are trying to carry out DDoS attacks on the websites of election bodies, access voters’ personal information and look for vulnerabilities in electronic voting systems. “It is very likely that over the next two years Russia and China will continue to be responsible for the majority of malicious cyberattacks on foreign elections, focusing on countries that are strategically important to them,” Canadian intelligence officials said.

At the same time, the special service noted that the source of 85 percent of malicious cyber attacks on elections last year could not be identified. “When it was possible to identify criminals, only two countries, Russia and China, were active against foreign elections in two and a half years. The document notes that “Cybercriminals are increasingly using obfuscation techniques and/or cybercriminals to avoid identification or conceal their ties to foreign governments.” We estimate that they outsource their activities.”

As reported by Ukrinform, the report by the Center for Communications Security, the Canadian special service responsible for the federal government’s cybersecurity, states that the rapid development of productive artificial intelligence technologies will allow them to be weaponized by those seeking artificial intelligence. Harming democratic states.
