Collaboration between the Royal Spanish Academy and Google is nothing new. The LEIA (Spanish language and artificial intelligence) project, which we have already told you about here, launched by a historical entity that has been cleaning, repairing and giving beauty for centuries, has been working since its inception as an excellent tool to ensure good use. of our language in contemporary technological solutions, and Google has been an active participant in this collaborative framework for some time.

So in this context A first class event took place this afternoon. which allowed us to inform ourselves about the status of this collaboration, which represents a before and after in the relationship between Spanish and some search engine solutions. At an event preceded by the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the Royal Spanish Academy (Pro-RAE Foundation), chaired by HM the King and held at the Royal Palace of El Pardo, we were able to learn about the main milestones of Google’s collaboration with the RAE in the context of LEIA.

The most notable is without a doubtinclusion of DLE (Dictionary of the Spanish Language) definitions in the search engine. In this way and from this inclusion, when searches are made for specific terms of our language, users will get the results of the RAE Spanish Language Dictionary. This increases the reliability of the search engine results when it is used to find definitions, although of course users will still be able to consult other sources.

On the other hand, it was also announced using the lexicon (DLE lexical repertoire) in Gboard, the Google keyboard that is part of Android by default and that we can also use in iOS. This plays a very important role for two reasons. The first is that the proposals for the term we want to write at the time will be more aligned with what the RAE determines, and the second is that the proposals for what we want to write next will also have this additional validation.

Recall that the Dictionary of the Spanish language is maintained together, with the participation of 23 Spanish language academies present around the world, so this addition to Google services has pan-Hispanic reach. and that its results are applied globally.

It is often said that the Internet has impoverished the quality of language, or rather the use of it. However, collaborations such as those that have emerged in the context of LEIA, with the RAE as the body responsible for ensuring the correct use of Spanish, and technology companies such as Google rowing in the same direction, undoubtedly propose solutions that point precisely in the opposite direction and This is something that deserves not only mention but also praise.
