The cybersecurity sector has long advocated for tracking the success of disciplines such as Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and Managed Detection and Response (MDR). Extended Detection and Response (XDR) brings together data from different tools and thus optimizes detection and response. The X in XDR is the midpoint where multiple security controls meet. This allows threat hunting to occur in real time and analyze a more comprehensive data set, allowing cyber professionals to work on a comprehensive platform.

Digital trust

One step further than XDR is what we call digital trust. Knowledge, frameworks, policies and procedures from various related professional fields are brought together – such as cybersecurity, IT auditors, risk management, data protection and general governance of digital technology. This super-correlation brings the benefits of platforms and approaches like XDR to a broader ecosystem within an organization. The ultimate goal is to improve overall cybersecurity activities.

For example, cybersecurity teams use XDR to search for threats in real time, and analyzing holistic data sets allows them to detect and respond more quickly. IT audit teams can also use these same events to prevent incidents, improve and automate their audit program, and gain insight into the audit space.

The same goes for privacy professionals looking to improve their privacy programs or risk managers using XDR to accurately calculate and manage risk. But thanks to XDR, technology professionals who incorporate cybersecurity controls into their digitalization projects also have the right information when making budget decisions or building cybersecurity sprints into their systems development program.

Change the mindset

The growing number of cyber threats requires sophisticated solutions. We need to move away from a domain-specific approach and work more collaboratively. The cybersecurity sector is evolving rapidly, for example through XDR and the emergence of skilled AI systems for advanced pattern recognition and decision-making. Other disciplines also concerned with digital trust must keep up and use these technologies to strengthen trust in the digital ecosystem. However, this requires a change in our mindset. We must understand that attackers always look for the weakest link. Imagine an unaudited part of the ecosystem, a flaw in the data management system that impacts the data protection framework. But also a misestimated risk or a digital transformation project that did not take possible supply chain risks into account when improving time-to-market.

The first step is to put together a team focused on digital trust, consisting of holistically trained specialists. These professionals need specific specialist knowledge, but also have to deal with related professions. In this way, they can adopt ideas, methods and systems from these related professions, learn to think outside the box and go beyond XDR.
