Meta Platforms announced that European users can now sign up for Threads without connecting to their Instagram account.
This was reported by Bloomberg, according to a report from Ukrinform.
He said Instagram connectivity was a major point of contention in the EU, where new rules on digital platforms prevent big tech companies from sharing data across different services. The new account type will have some limited features.
“People who use Threads without registering can view content on Threads, search for accounts, share content by copying links or sharing the platform, and report content on Threads, but cannot publish or interact with content,” it said in Meta.
The EU is imposing increasingly strict rules on the collection and use of user data, forcing big tech companies like Meta to rethink their operations in Europe.
As Ukrinform reports, a new function has already appeared in Threads, a competitor of the social network X (formerly Twitter). Threads users will now be able to delete their accounts in the application without deleting their Instagram.
