The Council described the attack on Kyivstar as one of the most powerful attacks in Europe in the history of all communications operators

The cyber attack on Kyivstar was one of the most powerful attacks carried out in the entire history of communications operators in Europe.

Oleksandr Fedienko, chairman of the cybersecurity subcommittee of the Committee on National Security and Defense of the Verkhovna Rada, stated this in the program Ukrinform “Samokhvalov asks”.

“Ukraine suffered – that is, its communications operator, we are talking about Kyivstar – one of the most powerful in Europe, one hundred percent, in the entire history of all operators (communications – ed.), cyber attack, which led to a temporary cyber attack of this operator’s business stop”, – noted.

Answering the question about the versions of the incident with Kievstar, the deputy expressed the opinion that there may be a Russian trace in this story.

“For example, we do not know what the security rules are when Russian operators with the same name Beeline have access to the Kyivstar network,” Fedienko said.

The chairman of the cybersecurity subcommittee of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security and Defense expressed his opinion on what happened to Kyivstar.

“As for what happened and what continues to happen, I think so: One team worked with this channel through which information flows, another team may have worked with the core and hardware. But most likely these were somehow calculated and began to be localized. And when? They realized that they were exposed and every “They risked everything,” he believes.

The parliamentarian believes that not only ordinary hackers were useful in this case.

“But substitutes were found in Kyivstar. I don’t know where they got them, but they did a good job, here we must praise them, this team and… the third day has already passed, but they (mostly) – ed.) Fedienko said that he had restored the functioning of the network.

Answering the question of what the damages of this incident will be, the attorney said that this includes reputational damages, loss of profits, compensatory costs that Kyivstar will incur to save its reputation, etc. He noted that it was related to

“But in general, if we try to calculate what this resulted in in our country, unfortunately, it will be practically impossible,” the deputy believes.

Answering questions about the leak of personal data, he stated that he could neither confirm nor deny.

The chairman of the cybersecurity subcommittee of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security and Defense made a number of recommendations on how citizens can protect themselves in the future.

“If we talk about ordinary citizens, I would strongly advise people to physically have 2, and maybe even three SIM cards from all operators. At least then you will always have a data transfer channel, that is, the Internet, you will have instant messengers, “he said.

Fedienko said that if a person uses a particular number as a financial number, it should not be in his social networks, accounts, because if a citizen’s account is stolen, this number is stolen from him.

“This is both two-factor authentication and corresponding passwords – not 12345 QWERTY etc., but some symbols, signs, etc. must be at least 15. And all passwords must be different. For the financial number – one password for Facebook, another for Telegram password, third. At least change passwords everywhere, it is 100 percent necessary to do this,” the deputy said.

Answering questions about the possibility of hackers killing all operators at once, the MP stated that this is practically impossible.

“Considering all three operators, hypothetically anything is possible these days, but I don’t have much confidence in it,” Fedienko said.

As reported, on the morning of December 12, the operator “Kyivstar” became the target of a powerful hacker attack, which led to a technical malfunction. Communication and internet access services became unusable.

The company assured that subscribers’ personal data will not be compromised. They also promised compensation to subscribers who did not have a connection or could not use the operator’s services.

The Security Service of Ukraine has initiated criminal proceedings regarding the cyber attack on Kyivstar. One of the versions of the investigation involved the participation of Russian special services.

It was learned that Solntsepek, one of the so-called hacker groups of the Russian Federation, claimed responsibility for the attack on Kievstar on December 13.
