A few months ago, Dyson introduced its first proposal in the world of audio, the revolutionary Dyson Zone. The British giant is leaving its comfort zone and doing so with a bang, with top-of-the-line helmets with a headband (in its line), to which they have added what seems to be their signature: the air-purifying visor. Welcome to the future of music and clean air.

Another of Dyson’s inescapable hallmarks is its meticulous design and premium finish. The Dyson Zone isn’t going to get any smaller, and we’ve already noticed that feeling since we got the box in our hands. Careful packaging measured to the millimeter so that every element fits. When we open it, we find the following:

  • Dyson Zone helmets
  • Removable travel visor. Magnetically attaches to your daily commute or travel, it delivers purified air directly to your nose and mouth.
  • 1.5 meter USB-C cable
  • Pack of 2 electrostatic filters with activated carbon
  • Brush for cleaning the visor
  • Visor cover
  • Twist-lock hard case

Let’s dive into the specs of the Dyson Zone, where noise cancellation is combined with air purification to offer a listening and wellness experience like no other.

Above all, we have a futuristic yet minimalist design, almost sci-fi, in the over-ear headphones with a striking premium finish in two tones of blue and silver that evokes a certain industrial feel. In the hand, we find headphones with a robust construction, weighing almost 585 grams, which, after the visor is attached, is close to 700 grams. The brand says the design is the result of six years of development and 500 prototypes before it made its debut in the audio world.

Advanced noise cancellation: urban silence

The main point that really excels in the Dyson Zone is the noise cancellation. With eight active noise-canceling microphones that work tirelessly 384,000 times per second, and two additional microphones for telephone and transparent systems, they can cancel up to 40 dB of unwanted noise (2 dB with passive cancellation and another 38 dB with active cancellation). . Urban traffic will be a thing of the past. You will almost feel like you are in space, isolated in absolute silence. You can turn active noise cancellation on and off by double-tapping the left earbud.

Sound quality at height

The Dyson Zone is equipped with a 40mm, 16ohm neodymium speaker that offers a complete audio experience. From the deepest bass to the softest treble, they are designed for discerning ears. This level of sound quality, added to noise cancellation, converges to ultra-low distortion. A combination that really lives up to expectations (which were already high), offering a realistic and detailed sound in which you won’t miss a single nuance.

To maintain a device with these characteristics, a battery that meets expectations could not be missing. The brand promises us up to 50 hours of autonomy with active noise cancellation and a quick charge that will give us approximately 9.5 hours of use in 30 minutes. Of course, we have to keep in mind that this battery life will be drastically reduced if we use the visor to clean the air. Helmets with a visor can be used for about 4 hours of use at low intensity, 2 and a half hours at medium and only 1 and a half hours at the highest power. It’s not something I use much, at least in my case, so it’s not a problem for me. It depends on the type of user you are.

To guarantee this long autonomy, the Dyson Zone has automatic on and off sensors whose main function is to save energy.

But if there’s one thing that catches the eye and is a real differentiator in the Dyson Zone, it’s the air purification visor. While it inevitably evokes the Covid era, its development began around 2018, before the pandemic. This two-stage closed filter system from Dyson removes not only urban fumes, but also viruses and 99% of ultra-fine dirt.

The visor, which comes separately and includes its own cover, attaches to helmets with a magnetic anchor. It has a semi-rigid design and can be folded under the chin, in case you want to stop talking to it or use your mobile phone for example, without anything reducing your field of vision. Once placed, it starts working automatically, without any contact with the face and almost does not disturb the sound experience, despite the more than 9,000 revolutions per minute that the fan rotates.

MyDyson: a multifunctional application

In keeping with the goal of cleaning the air you breathe, the headphones have sensors that measure the quality of the air around you, so you’ll be able to know when to activate the air purifier through the app. You can even check your city’s air quality index and get a real-time overview of your surroundings.

In addition to measuring the air quality around you, you can also use the MyDyson app to control the sound experience, measure the sound values around you, adjust the noise cancellation options and balance the sound according to your preferences between three modes: boosted, bass boosted and neutral. While it’s true that the Dyson Zone’s sound quality is indisputable, it’s true that coffee lovers may miss more customization options in the EQ.

We can control various functionalities from the headphones themselves, thanks to the joystick on the back of the right earcup, with which we can go to the next or previous song, increase or decrease the volume, pause or reactivate the sound and activate the voice assistant. . You can switch between different noise cancellation modes (isolation, transparency, and off) by double-tapping any earbud.

Weight is another feature that stands out in the Dyson Zone, and in this case not necessarily for the better. At 585 grams, which approaches 700 grams when the visor is attached, it’s a powerful device to say the least. Filters are also found on headphones, mostly adding volume to the equation.

This weight, which may seem so heavy with the device in hand, doesn’t seem so heavy once placed. The distribution of weight and padding, which is spread along the headband (sharing space with the batteries, which are also located there), means that it is distributed quite homogeneously. As a result, despite the fact that these are quite heavy and large helmets, it does not cause an uncomfortable or disproportionate feeling during use.

Conclusions

The Dyson Zone takes it one step further and reimagines the music listening experience, taking its already proven air purification outdoors. On their first foray into audio, they decided to add what they do so well, and that’s practically become their signature. All this with a futuristic touch that takes us out of our comfort zone and makes a place in the sector, even if it is not suitable for all budgets. A device with attention to detail, very high sound quality and a special touch that has become an “accessory” and we appreciate it. We’ll see what comes after this great debut.

Right now, the Dyson Zone can be purchased from the Dyson website for €649 and through retail channels such as Amazon.
