Guatemala’s President once again promises a smooth transition to the OAS

President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammatteionce again promised this Friday an orderly change of government in January following the visit to this Central American country of the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro.

The Guatemalan government said in a press release that Almagro arrived in Guatemala at the “invitation” of Giammattei last Wednesday.

Almagro and the President of Guatemala held a meeting, which was also attended by the President of the Permanent Council of the OAS Organization, Ronald Sanders.

Giammattei noted in this regard that he reaffirms his “commitment to democracy” in the change of command scheduled for January 14 next year, when Bernardo Arevalo de Leon will master.

Bernardo Arevalo de Leon, elected President of Guatemala.

Arevalo de Leon was elected in elections this year and will govern the country for four years with the Movimiento Semilla party, created in 2015.

However, since July last year, prosecutors have launched legal proceedings against Arevalo de Leon and the Semilla movement to prevent them from coming to power, even declaring last Friday that the elections should be canceled due to administrative irregularities.

Because of this, Almagro traveled to Guatemala at least three times to review the change of command process.

This week Guatemala’s Constitutional Court, the country’s highest court, assured that the elections were valid and a legal transition should be registered next January.

Arévalo de León and the OAS classified prosecutors’ actions against the elected president, his party and election judges as a “coup d’état” and an “attempted coup,” respectively.
