Summer Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 is upon us

This year's second Galaxy Unpacked, which, as in previous...

And yet they exist: is the LADA e-Largus suitable for the ‘short arm’

On December 15, 2023, the President of AVTOVAZ JSC Maxim Sokolov visited the LADA-Izhevsk production site for a working visit, who, together with the Head of the Udmurt Republic Alexander Brechalov, demonstrated to journalists the launch of a new large-scale project – the start of production from LADA e-Largus.

Although for now we are talking about assembling only a pilot batch, which is necessary for setting up and calibrating the installed technological equipment, as well as for certifying the car. The volume of the series is 30 pieces, but they promised to collect six on launch day. A correspondent for the AvtoVzglyad portal saw with his own eyes a working e-Largus, in which the President of Udmurtia took his nominal colleague in the presidential workshop, Maxim Sokolov, for a ride through the spacious and still half-empty workshops of the factory.

After well-known events, the Izhevsk car plant stopped producing cars. “Vesta” has been brought to its historic homeland for about a year now – to the assembly line in Togliatti. The fate of the residents of Izhevsk remained stamping body parts for the once popular VAZ bestsellers, starting with “Samara” and further down the list. At the same time, the factory has about 1,500 employees, the workshops look dull without the noise of the conveyor belt, and there is only snow on the sites with finished products.

However, everything is about to change quickly, and Largus (electricity and petrol), with full production expected to take place here in May, promises to revive the current gloom. In addition to assembly, stamping (64 positions), welding (already underway) and painting are also expected (Largus will be offered to consumers in eight colors). Well, presses are being prepared for molding plastic parts.

And the manufacturer promises that Largus will become the most localized Russian “foreign car” (already 50% of the components are ours). These days we don’t know what to call the new status of the popular “heel.” If you believe the VAZ release, LADA e-Largus is the first Russian electric car with a domestic deep localization battery.

Indeed, the structures of the Russian company Itelma are fully engaged in organizing the production of electric filling of the van. We even plan to make our own batteries. However, for the time being, hieroglyphs are readable at almost all nodes of the new “electric train”, which was presented to journalists on a separate stand for clarity. But in fact, it’s good that VAZ (unlike a number of other domestic car manufacturers) does not hide anything. Yes, for now it’s Chinese. But someday there will be one.

Many will ask: why so much noise? The car is almost twenty years old, has been assembled in Russia since 2012, and all electric minced meat can be purchased on AliExpress. And partly they will be right. But mass production is a special thing. The main thing is to think everything through and think through it so that buyers have enough to choose from and manufacturers do not lose money. Moreover, even though the technology is Chinese, it somehow leaks into Mother Russia. In current domestic conditions, this task is virtually impossible.

And yet the LADA e-Largus family will also include cargo passenger and 5-seat versions, as well as commercial vans with lithium-ion batteries of different capacities, capable of offering a range of up to 400 km on a single charge. The batteries are located in the floor where the petrol tank used to be, so that the interior and trunk volume were not affected by the arrival of the electric train.

Under the hood is a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor with a rated power of 50 kW with a short-term peak power of up to 120 kW. On the new instrument panel you can now check the charge level and power reserve. The power unit settings provide a maximum speed of 145 km/h (electronically limited), as well as dynamic acceleration to hundreds in less than 10 seconds. Quote from the edition:

– The development of the power plant for both versions was carried out by the Autonomous Energy Systems company SAE (part of the Itelma Group of Companies) in close cooperation with AVTOVAZ engineers. The batteries of the SAE are designed and manufactured in Russia, the regulation and temperature control system is also Russian. The company plans to localize the last imported element – the battery cell – in the next two years…

We are sure that this will be true over time. But for now we repeat that on the same power plant, “developed in close collaboration with AVTOVAZ engineers”, we see Chinese writing. And I think we will continue to observe them for a long time in the literal and figurative sense of these words. In any case, series production of LADA e-Largus will start in the second quarter of 2024, together with the resumption of production of gasoline LADA Largus with combustion engines. There is still a lull on prices, which is understandable.

And we can only hope that the new electric product will actually work in corporate parks for short-term delivery purposes. Although the economically sound concept of a small electric van in our hydrocarbon-rich Palestine is still a complete fiasco in principle.
