Especially for large packages and mobile phone subscriptions with little or a lot of data volume, Belgian telecommunications tariffs are far higher than those in neighboring countries.

The Belgian telecommunications regulator BIPT has compared the prices of telecommunications services for private individuals in our country with those in our neighboring countries Germany, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The study is based on prices from October 2023.

Against the background of high inflation, operators have adjusted their offers several times over the past year, both for mobile subscriptions and for fixed-line Internet and packages. According to BIPT, there is generally “more for more” in the mobile market in Belgium, with both the price and the number of gigabytes increasing.

Fixed internet or packages were more likely to include price indexing.

Mobile telephony

In order to be able to compare prices thoroughly, BIPT creates various profiles. For profiles that require mobile communications with 1,000 minutes of calls and a small data package of up to 5 GB per month, you pay significantly more in Belgium than in neighboring countries.

When it comes to average requirements between 20 and 70 GB, Belgium maintains its middle position and is in the cheapest half of the six countries for certain usage profiles. However, if you want 100 GB or more, you will pay the most in Belgium.

The United Kingdom and France are significantly cheaper than Belgium for all mobile phone profiles examined. The biggest gap is in 100 and 200 GB requirements. Of these, the cheapest subscription available on the Belgian market is up to 28 euros per month more expensive than in France.

Fixed Internet

When it comes to fixed internet as a separate service or as part of a package with mobile, Belgium is somewhat in line with Luxembourg and Germany, but is always in the most expensive half of the ranking.

The only profile where Belgium performs well is the package that includes landline telephony, at least thirty television channels and Internet with the modest minimum speed of 50 Mbit/s, for which Scarlet offers a competitively priced product.

However, as last year’s study showed, our country becomes noticeably more expensive as the package size increases. Belgium is by far the most expensive country for the most popular 4P-Bundles with Internet, digital television, mobile and landline telephony.

The United Kingdom and France are also cheaper than Belgium in terms of fixed internet and packages across all profiles examined. The biggest difference lies in the 4PBundle with a download speed of 200 Mbps. A consumer with such a profile pays 42 euros more per month for the cheapest offer on the market in Belgium than in France.

Diploma

The difference between fixed-line and mobile subscriptions is partly due to Orange’s position, which is transforming from a challenger in the fixed-line market to an established player, according to BIPT.

Higher customer churn for mobile subscriptions and the expected entry of the fourth mobile operator Digi in 2024 also play a role. BIPT believes that a possible introduction of fixed internet packages by Digi could lead to a revival of competitive dynamics in the fixed network market.
