PlayStation 5 exceeds 50 million units sold

The current generation still has a few years of validity left, but hIt’s been clear for some time now that the PlayStation 5 has clearly won confrontation of this generation. So much so that even Microsoft’s documentation that came to light during the Activision Blizzard King purchase process openly acknowledged this and assumed a significantly lower market share than Sony’s console achieved this generation. And the situation is even worse if we make a comparison between generations, because the PS5 improves the PS4, but the same does not happen in the case of the Redmond console.

More recent data, about a month ago, They immersed themselves in the difference, giving the PlayStation 5 roughly double the sales of the Xbox series. At the time, the accumulated value of the Sony console was 45.37 million, despite its price increase last summer, a move that Microsoft wanted to reproduce with the Xbox series, but which proved completely unsustainable, forcing Microsoft and distributors to adapt. their prices are well below what is desirable in Redmond.

With Black Friday and Christmas shopping, it’s possible that Microsoft’s console has reached 25 million units sold, which isn’t bad, but pales in comparison to its main rival. And as we can read in Eurogamer, PlayStation 5 has already managed to sell 50 million units worldwide. An even more impressive figure when you consider that although it was released by Sony today, it talks about cumulative sales up to December 9, meaning all the Christmas shopping of the last few weeks is left out.

PlayStation 5 exceeds 50 million units sold

The PlayStation 5 took a week longer than it took the PlayStation 4 to reach 50 million units sold, but to properly evaluate it, we have to take into account the huge inventory problems Sony faced in the first two years… but also, of course, the extraordinary interest that this initial shortage is generating. But in all cases, we are talking about an indisputable success that shows that Sony knows how to play its cards better than Microsoft.

But the problem of those from Redmond originates in the previous generation. After the huge set of successes that Microsoft achieved with the Xbox 360, a huge accumulation of bad decisions on the Xbox One undermined its image and sales in the last generation, but there was also some contagion from the current one. So with two generations each suffering defeats, Microsoft has to look for a different strategy to face the next generation… and it looks like they’re already on it.
