Telenet

According to BIPT, Telenet does not sufficiently adhere to the legally established Easy Switch procedure, which allows customers to easily switch providers. The company was fined one million euros.

Telenet was fined one million euros by BIPT. The telecommunications regulator has found that the Mechelen provider does not comply with the rules for the Easy Switch procedure. This allows customers to change operators without too much hassle. According to the Royal Decree that regulates Easy Switch, providers are obliged to offer the procedure spontaneously and by default to subscribers who wish to switch.

Inspection violations

The BIPT checked Telenet in almost 90 points of sale and found that the vast majority did not offer Easy Switch as standard. In this way, Telenet violates the rules, which results in a heavy fine.

Easy Switch is a process in which a customer’s services are assigned a unique identification code. This is shared with a new operator when a customer switches. For example, if you switch from Telenet to Orange for your landline internet, you can provide Orange with the corresponding Easy Switch code for your Telenet internet. The operators then arrange the cancellation of the old subscription among themselves, so that you as a customer have less administrative work and the likelihood of double bills is drastically reduced. The legislation surrounding Easy Switch has been in force since September 2016.
