A study shows that LED lamps enriched with metal halide perovskites can significantly speed up data transfer in homes and offices, marking a major advance in communications technology. New Internet technologies of the future are rapidly being developed by researchers, and LED-based communication channels are expected to be widely used in numerous new services and scenarios, including Light fidelity (Li-Fi), underwater communication, medium-high speed photonic communication. . connections and various Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

New research led by the University of Surrey and the University of Cambridge has explored how to unleash high-speed photonic sources using metal halide perovskites. These semiconductors are being explored along with LEDs due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and low-cost processing methods.

Lead author of the study and associate professor at the University of Surrey’s Institute of Advanced Technology, Dr. Wei Zhang said:

In this market, cost and compatibility often take precedence over data rates, and scientists are looking for alternative ways to reduce energy consumption per bit and increase compactness while trying to increase data link speeds.

“We have taken a major step forward in our research and demonstrated how metal halide perovskites can be a cost-effective and powerful solution for creating LEDs with great potential to increase bandwidths to gigahertz levels. The insights gained from this research will undoubtedly shape the future of data communications.”

“In addition, our research will accelerate the development of high-speed perovskite photodetectors and continuous-wave perovskite lasers, opening new avenues for advances in optoelectronic technologies.”

Hao Wang, co-author and Ph.D. student at Cambridge University said:

“We have conducted the first study to elucidate the mechanisms of high-speed perovskite LEDs, which is an important step towards realizing next-generation perovskite light sources for data transmission. The ability to fabricate perovskite emitters on solution-processed silicon substrates also paves the way for their integration with microelectronic platforms, paving the way for seamless integration and data transmission.” “It opens up new opportunities for advances in communication.”
