China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) announced the successful launch of two new satellites of the Beidou-3 navigation system (Beidou) on December 26. They were placed into orbit aboard the Changzheng-3B launch vehicle launched from the Xichang Cosmodrome in southwestern China’s Sichuan province.
Judging by images that appeared on Chinese social networks, a pair of side boosters of the Changzheng-3B rocket returned to Earth and crashed near populated areas in the Guangxi province below the city of Xichang.
In one of the videos, the accelerator is seen falling into a forest area and exploding. On the other hand, part of the rocket falls and its debris is subsequently found next to a residential building.
Meanwhile, the launch of Changzhen-3B is the 65th for China in 2023. This is a new national record for orbital launches in a calendar year.
