Google settles billion lawsuit over tracking of incognito surfers

Google has been accused of tracking Chrome users in incognito mode. The case was filed in 2020 and unsuccessfully dismissed by Google, but now the company appears to be reaching a settlement.

In 2020, Google was accused of tracking Chrome users’ activities in the incognito browser. The plaintiffs alleged that Google uses tools such as analytics, apps and browser plugins to monitor users. After a failed attempt by Google to dismiss the lawsuit in 2020, an agreement has now been reached. Details about this are not yet known.

Incognito Browser isn’t so incognito after all

As a Chrome user, when you open the Incognito window, your searches and websites visited are not saved in your browser history. The company even reportedly tracked users in this mode so they could sell targeted ads based on that information. Prosecutors also alleged that the company falsely led people to believe they had control over the information they sought in the incognito window.

Prosecutors accused Google of violating federal wiretapping laws and California privacy laws and sought up to $5,000 per affected user. They also claim that millions of people have been affected since 2016, which explains the huge damages. Google has probably agreed, but an official statement is still pending.
