The miser pays twice: customs has found a way to punish unscrupulous car importers

The Far Eastern Customs Department of the Federal Customs Service has issued a letter warning of the consequences of selling personal data to importers of foreign cars. This practice has evolved to obtain benefits for the payment of recycling fees.

As Drom.ru reports, the Federal Customs Service has uncovered a scheme where importers buy passport data and tax identification numbers from individuals: they use them to import cars, ostensibly for personal use, allowing them to pay a recycling fee at a preferential rate. In reality, such cars are of course subsequently resold. The nominee’s details are required to complete the customs declaration for passengers, and the payer of all duties and taxes is accordingly the declarant.

Then, after customs clearance, “signs of unreliable information declarations” are often identified, for example the declared value of a car. In this case, the Federal Customs Service informs the declarant of the need to pay the difference – and then the person whose data was used by the importers at customs gets a nice amount.

In the event of voluntary non-payment, the case will be referred to the court and bailiffs. For example, the number of additional assessments based on the results of tax audits this year ranged from 380,000 to 1,200,000 rubles for each person.
