Ubiquity launches the Swiss Army Knife Ultra: an access point that is fortunately affordable given its outdated specifications.

Ubiquity thinks it’s 2014 and launches this Swiss Army Knife Ultra. This is a versatile WiFi access point based on the now hopelessly outdated WiFi 5 protocol. Wifi 5 dates back to 2013 and was replaced by Wifi 6 in 2018, which not only offers higher throughput speeds, but is also much better at communicating with multiple devices at the same time. WiFi 7 will be launched later this year. The Swiss Army Knife Ultra Luckily it only costs 73 euros excluding VAT.

Compact

Not everything about this product, also known as UK-Ultra, is disappointing. The access point receives an IPX6 certification and you can hang it indoors and outdoors. In addition, it works via Power over Ethernet (PoE). This is the only way the UK-Ultra can be supplied with power. The device is small and measures only 13.7 cm x 8.4 cm x 3.4 cm. This small size must be one of the advantages of the access point, although Ubiquity does not provide the included but optional antennas.

Ubiquity has been selling WiFi 6 access points that work both indoors and outdoors for some time. The U6 Mesh is the most relevant equivalent with WiFi 6 support, but costs more than twice as much at 165 euros excluding VAT. When it comes to the Swiss Army Knife Ultra, the most important thing is its price. If you pay very little, you get very little in return: both technically and in terms of size. Undoubtedly there are scenarios where such a device is relevant, although we would generally recommend that networks be a little more future-proof.
