A study by British astronomers has revealed that our ideas about the colors of the planets Neptune and Uranus are wrong, as both giant planets have similar shades of greenish-blue.
According to Ukrinform, this situation was reported by the BBC.
The first images of the planets, obtained during a space mission in the 1980s, showed Neptune to be dark blue and Uranus to be green. But it turned out that previous images of Neptune had been enhanced to show details of the planet’s atmosphere, changing its true color.
“They (scientists – ed.) emphasized the blue color to show features that can be seen in Neptune’s atmosphere, and that’s why the image looks very blue, but in fact Neptune is very similar to Uranus,” said the University Professor of Astrophysics. Edinburgh Catherine Heymans.
Astronomers have long known that most modern images of the two planets do not accurately reflect their true colors, and improving the images is a normal procedure in astronomical research, according to British scientists.
Current analysis has shown that Uranus and Neptune have a similar shade of greenish-blue. Neptune has a slight blue tint, and this is due to the thinner fog layer on the planet.
The study also found that Uranus looks slightly greener in summer and winter when one of its poles is facing the Sun. However, in spring and autumn, when the Sun is above the equator, it takes on a bluer color.
Scientists using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) for the first time have discovered a mysterious dark spot on Neptune from Earth, Ukrinform reports.
