Google Assistant is currently the best choice for Android phones. This is not only because it is the default option on many Android devices, but also because it is superior to most other assistants available today.

Google is trying to expand its capabilities by adding generative AI technology from Bard, a language model that processes text, voice, and images. Interestingly, Google isn’t the only one developing AI-powered assistants for Android. A recent report from Android Authority suggests that ChatGPT, known for its advanced language capabilities, could be the new assistant for Android users.

For those who don’t know, third-party assistants are nothing new for Android. Previously, players such as Microsoft’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa offered options to users looking for a different assistant experience on Android. But none of them managed to dislodge Google Assistant from the first position.

But ChatGPT has the potential to shake things up. Android Authority has discovered a new action in the latest version of the Android app that launches an overlay that supports voice input, similar to Google Assistant. However, currently this function cannot be fully used.

The app code also points to attempts to make ChatGPT the default assistant by referencing the “assistant_interaction_service” and “supportsAssist” tag. But there is still much work ahead of us.

Interestingly, Microsoft removed the standard Bing Assistant features when it launched its own GPT-based LLM experience. The timing of this potential change, and even its availability as a free feature, remains unclear. ChatGPT developers OpenAI are offering additional features through a Plus subscription, and code hints indicate that the Quick Settings tile for ChatGPT may be locked behind this payment screen.
