Losses insured against destructive earthquake in Japan could achieve $6.4 billionAccording to estimates from a US disaster modeling company Karen Clark and company (KSS).

Residential property losses account for more than two-thirds of the total, as most commercial and industrial buildings in the affected cities are more resistant to earthquakes due to their predominantly steel structures, according to KCC.

The earthquake struck western Japan’s Noto Peninsula on New Year’s Day, destroying homes, causing a tsunami and leaving remote communities isolated.

The death toll from the disaster is approaching 100, and the United States said today it was preparing military logistics support and assistance.
