After weeks of delays, United Launch Alliance launched a Vulcan Centaur rocket from Cape Canaveral Cosmodrome in Florida at 02:18 local time (9:18 Kiev time) as part of the Cert-1 mission. The rocket also carries the descent module of the special Peregrine mission created by the American company Astrobotic.
The astrobotic Peregrine lander was scheduled to leave the upper portion of Vulcan 50 minutes after liftoff. The moon landing is planned to take place on February 23.
Peregrine will perform six experiments for NASA as the first flight of the agency’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. The mission will be the first U.S. moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. If successful, Peregrine will be the first private mission to land safely on the Moon.
Peregrine is also carrying a number of payloads to the moon, including a package for the DHL delivery service, a digital art gallery, human DNA samples and cremated remains belonging to space funeral companies Celestis and Elysium.
As reported, on December 25, the Japanese lunar landing module SLIM entered orbit of the moon.
