With the introduction of the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid, Lenovo is taking the concept of hybrid very seriously. This device serves as a Windows laptop until you remove the screen from the keyboard and then hold an Android tablet in your hand.

Lenovo will unveil the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid at CES 2024. This device is both an Android tablet and a Windows laptop. The solution consists of two components:

  • The ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid Station
  • The ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid Tab

The Hybrid Station contains the bottom of the laptop with the keyboard as well as the hardware and Windows 11. Essentially, it’s a desktop computer disguised as a laptop keyboard. You can even connect a classic external monitor via USB Type C, even without a laptop screen.

Finally, the laptop screen/tablet part is removable and has its own CPU and memory on board. The thing can also serve as an Android tablet without a base station nearby. In laptop mode, you can choose whether to work in the Android environment or Windows 11. Keyboard and touchpad work on both operating systems. Of course, without a base station you only have access to the Android environment.

Specifications

For the Windows aspect, Lenovo integrates the latest generation Intel Core Ultra 7 processors. This is supported by 32 GB of RAM. There is also a PCIe SSD with a capacity of 1TB under the keyboard. The tablet works with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, equipped with 12 GB LPDDR5 RAM. The tablet’s OLED screen measures 14 inches and has a resolution of 2.8K. Both parts of the hybrid laptop have a battery on board.

Lenovo assumes that you don’t even have to choose between Windows 11 and Android with this hybrid device. About the Hybrid streamThe functionality allows you to use Android applications in a window in the Windows environment. Functionally, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid appears to be a very flexible and mobile device. However, the weight is not low: the base station weighs 970 grams and the tablet weighs 785 grams. This means that you still carry 1.75 kg in your backpack, even though you have two devices with you in practice. This original laptop will only go on sale this September at an unprecedented suggested retail price.
