The two-step verification app Authy will only be available on mobile devices starting August 2024.

Authy is one of the few two-step verification apps that works on desktop. From August 2024, the app will only be available on mobile devices. The decision was made by parent company Twilio, which says it wants to streamline its focus to add more value to existing product solutions that are increasingly in demand.

Two-step verification

Authy generates a different code every 30 seconds that you can use to sign in to a linked account like other 2FA apps like Google and Microsoft Authenticator. Until now, the app was one of the few that could also be used on the desktop. This can be useful if you want to log in from the computer without having to use your phone.

However, the app is discontinuing its desktop version and will only be available for Android and iOS. Authy recommends switching to the mobile version, which can automatically sync with the app on your computer. When switching completely to another app, it is important to know that Authy does not have an export function. Therefore, you must deactivate all your connected accounts before linking them to a new 2FA app.

Optimize focus

Parent company Twilio wants to streamline its focus and shift attention to existing product solutions that the company believes will be in high demand. Twilio will move the Authy customer support hub to the Help Center on the Twilio website after January 15, 2024.
