South Korean Parliament decides to ban breeding and sale dog for human consumptioncurrent practice in Asian countries such as China, India, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia and Indonesia..

It is estimated that some 30 million dogs euthanized each year in Asia, including about 10 million from China, 5 million in Vietnam and one million in Indonesia, although the numbers may be higher due to illegal trade, according to the non-governmental organization Humane Society International.

Despite these figures, dog meat consumption is not widespread in the region, and the legal situation varies by country and sometimes by city.

Ban in South Korea

South Korea’s National Assembly (Parliament) today approved a ban on the breeding, slaughter, distribution and sale of dog meat for human consumption, representing a historic victory for animal rights activists after decades of struggle in the Asian country.

The rules will take effect after a three-year grace period, and starting in 2027, violators could face up to two years in prison or a fine of more than $22,000.

In China, dog meat is mainly sold in some southern provinces, and its consumption is legal throughout the country, with the exception of some cities such as Zhuhai and Shenzhen.

Since 2009, the Chinese city of Yulin has celebrated a dog meat festival in the summer, an event in which hundreds or thousands of dogs are eaten amid criticism from animal welfare groups and a growing number of consumers.

In the case of Taiwan, eating dogs was legal for many years, although there were laws prohibiting their sale, but in 2017 the country became the first in Asia to ban consumption of this type of meat.

Obama’s experience

Muslims consider eating pork and dogs unclean, but in Indonesia, dog meat is legal to eat in areas inhabited by non-Muslim tribes or ethnic groups, such as Sulawesi or Maluku.

The former American president himself Barack Obama In his memoir, “Dreams from My Father,” he admitted that he tried dog meat in Indonesia, where he lived in his youth, and even joked about it at a meeting with reporters at the White House.

Tomohon Market in Sulawesi, known for selling exotic animals for consumption, decided last July to ban the killing and consumption of dogs. A similar measure was adopted in Jakarta and other cities in the country.

Several years ago, some prominent Vietnamese, including film director Charlie Nguyen and rapper Suboi, began campaigning against the consumption of dog meat, although the habit is still legal and accepted in much of the country.

Thailand banned the sale and consumption of dogs in 2014, although it continues in some areas of the northeast, although the practice is more common in Cambodia, except in Siem Reap province where it is illegal.
