Amid the success of the ongoing Ingenuity helicopter-style drone mission to Mars, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration is aiming to use a much larger aircraft to explore the Red Planet.
The aircraft-like device proposed by Coflow Jet is called the Mars Airborne and Ground Intelligent Explorer (MAGGIE). This project was selected by NASA as a potential technology for further applications.
The solar-powered MAGGIE was designed to fly at high altitudes in the rarefied atmosphere of Mars. Since the device will rise vertically into the air and land on the surface of the Red Planet, like modern flying electric cars, there will be no need for a special strip for takeoff and landing.
According to the plan, the aircraft will fly at an altitude of 1,000 meters and be able to travel up to 180 kilometers in almost eight Martian days (sol) on a single battery charge. Engineers estimate that MAGGIE could fly more than 16,000 kilometers in one Martian year.
