Not long ago, Google launched its Nearby Share feature in Europe, as a direct competitor to Apple’s AirDrop, which has been around for more than 12 years. Android users can quickly and easily share files between PC and Android phone with this Nearby Share feature. However, thanks to good relations between Google and Samsung, this feature will be renamed Quick Share, a well-known feature for Galaxy users.
The Nearby Share feature is no stranger to Android users. This handy feature allows users to share images, videos, files, links or Wi-Fi passwords with nearby Android, Chromebooks and Windows devices. This feature was an answer to the long-standing Apple AirDrop.
Due to the close relationship between Google and Samsung, there is now a name change for the Nearby Share feature. It will be renamed Quick Share, which will look familiar to Samsung users. Both features use Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi Direct to find nearby devices and transfer files.
But what is the result of this merger between Nearby Share and Quick Share? The first difference is that Quick Share only works on Galaxy devices. A second key difference is that Samsung’s Quick Share can share with up to 5 devices at the same time, unlike Nearby Share which only has the ability to share with one device at a time.
Additionally, file transfer limits vary. Nearby Share has a limit of 500 files per day with unlimited size, Quick Share allows files up to 1GB, with a maximum of 5GB per day. Finally, Samsung’s current Quick Share only works on Galaxy devices, but steps are being taken to address this issue.
It does not yet seem clear what the underlying function is and what the new Quick Share can achieve. But the merger should make the differences disappear. Google says the new Quick Share feature will roll out to all Nearby Share devices next month.
