Peruvian prosecutor’s office requested 34 years in prison for the former president Pedro Castillo for the failed self-coup on December 7, 2022, the Ministry of Industry and Trade reported this Friday.

“The Ministry demands 34 years in prison for Pedro Castillo Terrones for crimes of rebellion, abuse of power and serious breach of the peace. The former president is accused of carrying out a coup on December 7, 2022,” the prosecutor’s office said on its account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Since December 7 last year, the former president has been detained under a preventive detention order for a period of 18 months, and is burdened by another preventive detention order for a period of 36 months. He is being investigated on suspicion of running a corrupt network within the executive branch..

Castillo announced the same on December 7 in his address to the nation closure of parliamentreorganization of the justice system and the establishment of an emergency executive power, which was to govern by decree.

For this decision, he was fired by Congress and subsequently arrested by his own bodyguard.

Accusation He also asked for 25 years in prison against then-Prime Minister Betsy Chavez for the crime of sedition.

Likewise, Prosecutors asked for 25 years in prison for former ministers of Foreign Trade Roberto Sánchez Palomino and Interior Willy Huerta Olivas, as well as Peruvian National Police (PNP) officers Manuel Losada Morales, Jesús Venero Mellado and Eder Infanzón Gómez.
