Canada does not support ‘premise’ of Israeli genocide case: Trudeau

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, said his country does not support the “premise” of the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its attacks in the Gaza Strip.

Canada spoke formally for the first time about the case, which ended this Friday in The Hague with a hearing in which the State of Israel responded to the charges brought by South Africa.

Trudeau told a news conference that while Canada is a “tremendous defender” of the international system of rules and justice, of which the International Court of Justice is a fundamental part, in this case the North American country “does not support the premises of the case presented by South Africa.”

Since South Africa announced it would appeal to the International Court of Justice, Canadian authorities have remained completely silent on the case and have not responded to media requests, including EFE, for clarification of Canada’s position.

Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip have killed more than 23,400 people

Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have killed 112 people and injured 194 over the past 24 hours.

Thus, the total number of deaths since the beginning of the war in the enclave is 23,469 people, of which 70% are civilians.

The number of people injured has exceeded 59,600, with more than 7,000 bodies estimated to be buried under the rubble, according to the sector’s Ministry of Health.

“The Israeli occupation is deliberately destroying neighborhoods, infrastructure, civilian and medical facilities, and committing crimes of genocide and mass executions in the Gaza Strip,” ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.

Israel destroyed 150 hospitals

In addition, the bombs destroyed 150 medical facilities, rendering 30 hospitals and 53 medical centers inoperable, and damaging 121 ambulances.

Due to the lack of hospital services, more than 707 wounded and 438 sick were transferred abroad through the Rafah crossing into Egypt for medical care.

“The number of wounded and sick people allowed to leave the Gaza Strip is very small compared to the thousands of cases requiring therapeutic intervention to save lives,” said the spokesman, who put the number of wounded people requiring treatment abroad at 6,200. (EFE)
