WhatsApp is testing polls on channels

WhatsApp’s feature set is expanding again, with polls appearing in channels on Android as part of the latest beta update. This beta release (version 2.24.2.11) allows some testers to create polls in channels, similar to existing features in individual and group chats.

The new “poll” option, accessible via the paperclip icon in channel chats, allows users to create up to 12 multiple-choice questions. Notably, the poll icon is displayed in green instead of the usual yellow, but the basic function remains the same: votes are anonymous and not even the poll author sees individual responses.

Although access to this feature is not guaranteed for all beta testers, its existence indicates that it will soon be available for wider availability. Android beta users who want to rate views on their channels should pay attention to the green survey icon.

We currently don’t know exactly when this feature will be available to everyone. Since this feature is still in its early stages, it will undergo further testing and improvements in future beta versions. While it’s fun to think about using surveys across channels, it may take some time before they’re available to all users.

Separately, another beta update (version 2.24.2.12) covers a recent bug fix for Android users. A previous update accidentally broke the display of status update thumbnails next to contact names. This new update brings back this functionality, bringing back the usual convenience.

These developments, along with the latest beta tests for improved text formatting and themes on Android, point to a flurry of activity on WhatsApp in early 2024. With more features and improvements in the works, the popular messaging app looks to keep users engaged and looking forward to future updates.
