The Brainly project is a platform for collaborative learning and has branches in many countries. Especially its Russian branch is called “Knowledge”. Although the site is still available in one of the languages defined for Ukrainian users, the company has not entered our market.
what is known
On the platform, students can ask questions about their homework and get reliable answers from their peers, teachers or parents. According to Brainly, the number of active users of the “Information” platform worldwide – 350 million per month. 45 million of them are in Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Belarus. There is no specific data for Russia alone, so it is unclear what the loss of the visitor base will be.
- To control the restriction of access to sites and site pages, an entry about the blockade appeared in the registry of Roskomnadzor.
- Reason for blocking – Art. 15.3 of the Law “Information, Information Technology and Information Protection”, which describes the procedure for blocking sites containing “false information, calls for riots, extremism and participation in illegal mass actions”.
- As Brainly explains, platform refuses to remove information about Russia’s war against Ukrainewhat he used to call “special operations” because he believed it contradicted the service’s mission to share information.
Obviously, we will not meet this requirement. Removing such content from our knowledge base goes against our mission and breaks Brainly’s promise to our users who rely on its verified knowledge platform to accelerate understanding and learning.
– It is stated in the description of the company.
Russia does not like the truth
One particular reason for the block was an article posted on the service. In it, the company asks, “What happened in Ukraine after February 24, 2022?” He answers his question. and has already amassed tens of millions of views. The company explains this by saying that many “typical” places where Russian citizens can get this information are blocked because it contradicts the official position of Putin’s totalitarian government. Because of this, the article began to rise rapidly in the positions in the search results.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we decided to increase the visibility of our war-related responses to our platform by providing greater access to uncensored information about the conflict, its historical context and current international response.
– said Brainly in a comment, which claims it’s non-profit and has even turned off all ads and payments on “Knowledge.com” since early March.
Now the propagandists of the invaders have closed this gap as well. However, the site is still accessible via VPN.
