Proximus scores highly in the latest Ookla numbers and performs significantly better than Telenet and Orange. The city of Ghent has the fastest mobile network of all three providers.
In the latest numbers from Ookla we see that mobile download and upload speeds increased sharply in 2023 from 56.46 Mbps to 72.44 Mbps (35th place worldwide). The upload speed remains relatively stable at around 12 Mbit/s. The latency (25 ms) increased slightly by one millisecond over the course of a year.
If we look specifically at the fourth quarter of 2023, Proximus can be proud. At 89.67 Mbit/s, their average download speed is half that of its competitors Orange and Telenet/Base. Proximus also offers the most stable connection: 89.8 percent of the measurements show a download speed of at least (modest) 5 Mbit/s. Ookla uses this speed to measure consistency. Here too, Proximus performs better than Orange (87.5%) and Telenet/Base (87.4%).
Interesting fact: The iPhone 15 (Pro) has the fastest download speed of all devices measured (median: 124 Mbit/s), followed by the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (median: 109.5 Mbit/s).
If we compare the mobile networks in the cities, Ghent is way ahead with an average of 168.9 Mbit/s, followed by Antwerp, Charleroi, Liège and Brussels.
Fixed internet in Belgium
Fixed-line internet connections also increased from 86.6 Mbit/s to 94.7 Mbit/s in 2023 (46th place worldwide). The average upload increased by 1 Mbit/s to 20.2 Mbit/s within a year.
When it comes to average download speeds, Telenet and Voo are the leaders, followed by Orange and Proximus.
Here too, Ghent performs best in terms of fixed-line internet, but here the lead is significantly smaller, followed by Antwerp, Charleroi and Brussels with just under 1-5 Mbit/s.
