NASA experts combined data from the Chandra, James Webb and Hubble telescopes to examine a composite image of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant.

Detailed analysis of the data combined into a surprisingly bright image shows the outer reaches of this supernova remnant, the brightest radio source in the sky outside the solar system at frequencies above one gigahertz.

The composite image includes X-ray data from Chandra (blue), infrared data from Webb (red, green, blue), and optical data from Hubble (red and white). The outer parts of the image also include infrared data (red, green, and blue) from the Spitzer Space Telescope.

One of the main reasons astronomers wanted to combine data from telescopes was to study the unique remnant of supernova Cassiopeia A, called the “Green Monster.”

Researchers concluded that the “Green Monster” was created by a blast wave from a star hitting surrounding material. Thus, the assumptions based solely on Webb’s data were confirmed.
