The SLIM (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) apparatus, sent to space with the H-2A rocket, will try to land on the Moon on January 19, 2024. If successful, Japan will become the fifth country in history to land on a natural satellite of the Earth.
According to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), on December 25, 2023, SLIM successfully performed a maneuver to enter an elliptical lunar orbit. Over the following days, the device gradually lowered the altitude of its orbit. By January 19, its altitude will drop to 15 kilometers, after which the device will begin its descent. If all goes well, SLIM will land on the slope of the Shioli crater at approximately 17:20 Kiev time.
The mission’s main mission is to implement precision landing technology, but SLIM also has a pair of micro-river. One of them will move by jumping around the moon, while the other, similar in size to a baseball, will move by rolling. Both vehicles carry cameras and other scientific payloads.
