Gelsinger once again makes Intel the world’s largest chip manufacturer

In terms of sales, Intel is once again the largest chip manufacturer in the world. Samsung took over the crown a few years ago, but now has to give it up again.

Intel is the largest chip manufacturer in the world. Gartner indicates this based on sales figures for 2023. Intel had sales of 48.7 billion US dollars, Samsung is in distant second place with 39.9 billion US dollars. This is important: Intel was the largest chip manufacturer for years, but under the leadership of Brian Krzanich and later Bob Swan, the processor specialist lost a lot of its popularity. In 2022, Samsung was the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world for the first time.

Current CEO Pat Gelsinger promised to reverse the downward trend and appears to be succeeding. This year, Intel is once again the biggest, in a challenging market. The semiconductor market collapsed to total sales of $533 billion: 11.1 percent less than the $599 billion in 2022.

Clap for the memory segment

Intel maintains the top position because its sales are shrinking less (16.7 percent) than Samsung’s (37.5 percent). This is partly because Intel mainly makes CPUs and Samsung mainly makes memory chips. The storage market was hit very hard last year. This segment shrank by 37 percent in 2023. Demand for other chips (CPUs, modems, etc.) only fell by three percent. Intel now has a 9.7 percent market share, compared to 7.5 percent for Samsung.

Qualcomm takes third place, followed by Broadcom, Nvidia and SK Hynix. AMD is only in seventh place with a market share of 4.2 percent and sales of $22.3 billion. However, Intel’s major competitor was able to limit the damage well and only lost 5.6 percent in sales compared to 2022.

Nvidia is growing like crazy

There is only one big winner in 2023, and that is Nvidia. Chip Designer was in twelfth place last year and is now in fifth place with revenue of $23.9 billion; 56 percent more than in the previous year. While the storage segment was hit by an excess of inventory, Nvidia saw a significant increase in its coffers due to its hunger for AI hardware.
