Japanese start-up Astroscale has revealed details of a device project that will refuel satellites in space. It is planned to be placed into orbit in 2026.
Many satellites still operate properly after many years in space, but often for their continued operation, the vehicles do not have enough fuel to maintain the required altitude and orbit.
The Prototype Shuttle for Astroscale Refueling (APS-R) vehicle concept is a small satellite designed to perform multiple satellite refueling missions in geostationary orbit.
APS-R will be attached to a fuel tank to be shipped by Orbit Fab, a startup that calls space refueling stations. The company is working on a gas station that it wants to build 36,000 kilometers above Earth. APS-R will refuel and go to the customer’s satellite, refuel and inspect for any fuel leaks or other problems. Then it will go back to the fuel tank.
