Ron DeSantis, Trump’s Biggest Threat, Retires from White House

Presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, once seen as Republicans’ best chance to overtake Donald Trump, dropped out of the race on Sunday, a relatively early exit that underscores the tight control the former president maintains over the party.

DeSantis, 45, endorsed Trump in a video posted on social media site X.

DeSantis was widely considered one of the Top contenders for the 2024 Republican nomination and the natural heir to Trump because of his combative style and deeply conservative views. In early 2023, he led several public opinion polls against Trump.

But support Governor of Florida has been declining for months due to misguided campaign strategy, his apparently rocky relationship with voters on the campaign trail, and Trump’s still-intense control over much of the party’s base.

DeSantis’s failure to nominate means former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley is now the last Republican in the race who has a chance—however remote—of denying Trump the nomination. The winner of the race for the Republican nomination will meet with the president Joe Bidenlikely Democratic candidate in the November general election.

According to most public opinion polls, more than 70% of Republicans have a positive view of Trump. This put DeSantis in a position where he had to appeal to voters who were still admiring Donald Trumpas well as those who hated him passionately.

DeSantis failed on both counts. He has never been able to explain to most Trump supporters why he is the best choice. republicans Supporters seeking to get rid of the former president split their votes among several candidates. Haley, in particular, has become a favorite among moderate Republicans as they consolidate.

When DeSantis diverged from Trump on policy, he almost always defended a more conservative position. In April, he signed a six-week abortion ban in Florida, which he ultimately supported in election campaignalthough it has made some donors and moderate Republicans wary.

DeSantis opposed additional US military aid to Ukraine and took punitive action against Walt Disney Co. after the company took a stand against Florida legislation restricting discussions of gender and sexuality in classrooms.

Pro-business critics within the party said DeSantis should not have taken on Disney.

While many major donors supported DeSantis from the start, they began to revolt over the summer.
