Hamas: Attack on Israel was ‘natural response’ to death of thousands of Palestinians

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) released a report justifying the October 7 attack as a “natural response” to the historical situation of the Palestinian people. The group denies it deliberately targeted civilians, but admits:errors“.

The text, entitled “Our History”, offers to “clarify” the surprise attack called Flood in Al Aqsa and represents the first official comment by an armed Islamist organization on the incident.

“This was a necessary step and a natural response to all Israeli plots against the Palestinian people,” says Hamas, which places the offensive in the historical context of “the Judaization of Palestinian lands in the occupied West Bank” and the deaths of “thousands.” Palestinians since 2000.

They argue that the attack was directed against the State of Israel and not against Jews or for religious reasons.

Thus, it states that the attack was carried out on Israeli military installations with the aim of capturing soldiers and then using them to put pressure on the Israeli authorities to achieve the release of thousands of prisoners.

He also claims that the militants who entered Israeli territory attacked only soldiers or people with weapons. According to the 16-page text, preventing harm to civilians “is a religious and moral obligation” of Hamas’ armed wing, the Ezzeldin al-Qassam Brigades.

“If there were cases of attacks on civilians, these were accidents during the confrontation with the occupying forces.”

“Some mistakes may have been made” during the attack “due to the rapid collapse of Israeli security and military systems and the chaos that erupted in areas near the Gaza Strip,” the organization said. Hamas claims that “the Israeli army and police killed many Israelis due to confusion.”

For this reason, he asks the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate “all crimes committed in occupied Palestine.” Moreover, he calls on the CFI prosecutor’s office to “immediately” open an investigation.

The document talks about what will happen after the war. “The Palestinian people have the ability to decide their future and solve their internal problems,” so “no one” has the right to make decisions on their behalf, he stressed. Thus, he calls on Israel to withdraw from the Gaza Strip.

The attack by Palestinian militias on October 7 killed approximately 1,200 people, 700 of whom were civilians. Another 240 people were kidnapped, of whom 100 were released during a seven-day truce in November in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Israel accuses Hamas of committing war crimes, torture, rape and mutilation, although Hamas denies this. Israel’s response was a military offensive against the Gaza Strip, which Palestinians estimate killed more than 25,000 people, more than half of them civilians. (Europe Press).
