Two US Navy SEALs who went missing in the Gulf of Aden earlier this month during an attack on an Iranian ship have not been found after an extensive search and their status has been changed to killed, military sources said Sunday.

The SEALs went missing after boarding a ship during a Jan. 11 operation off the coast of Somalia, U.S. Central Command posted on social media site X.

“We mourn the loss of two of our Navy Special Warfare personnel, and we will always honor their sacrifice and example. Our prayers are with the families of the SEALs, their friends, the U.S. Navy and the entire Special Operations community at this time,” CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Eric Kurilla said in a statement.

The joint operation conducted by the United States, Spain and Japan was aimed at searching for missing Navy SEALs across more than 21,000 square miles of ocean, CENTCOM said in a statement.

That mission has now become a recovery operation, CENTCOM said.

The United States carried out a series of strikes against Houthi targets in response to attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea that have disrupted global trade and raised concerns about supply bottlenecks.

U.S. Central Command forces on Saturday attacked a Houthi anti-ship missile that was aimed toward the Gulf of Aden and was preparing to be launched, the U.S. military said.

The Houthis, who control Yemen’s most populated areas, say their attacks on commercial shipping are aimed at supporting Palestinians in Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.

The Houthi movement has vowed to continue its attacks despite attacks on radars and missiles last week.
