Hacker group “BO Team” hacked a major Russian space hydrometeorology research center.

According to Ukrinform, relevant information is published on the Information Resistance website.

“This time the patriotic citizens of Ukraine, who were part of the BO Team, ordered to “live long” to the multi-year database of the Far Eastern Center of the federal state budget institution Space Hydrometeorological Research Center “Planeta” (DC) FSBU “NDC “Planeta”). Thus, a significant blow was dealt to the direct consumers of the “Planet”: the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the General Staff, the emergency services of the Ministry of Emergencies of the Russian Federation, the Northern Fleet,” the report says.

As noted, the hacking of the database of the State Federal Bureau of Investigation “NDC “Planet” will, among other things, affect the financing of the Russian war in Ukraine, through the main of this institution almost from the very beginning the hydrometeorological computer center of the FSB, which provided access to Russian military personnel and their families actively helps.

Ukrainian hackers reportedly first gained access to Planet’s two servers and then attacked all of its devices and services. As a result, an unprecedented amount of information was destroyed due to such actions – about 2 petabytes (about 2 million gigabytes) of data in total.

Even the advertised antivirus software installed on all Kaspersky servers did not help the company. The destroyed information also includes weather and satellite data that were actively used before that, including by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Emergencies, Roscosmos and many other leading structures of the aggressor country. Unique research developed with them over the years.

The operation of supercomputers with the LUSTER file system and about 60 computing nodes each was also paralyzed. The approximate cost of such a PC and software reaches 350 thousand dollars. But Russians will not only face financial problems during the future recovery. Cray is a licensed product of one of the leading companies in the USA. And in conditions of serious sanctions on the supply of software from the United States to the Russian Federation, the possibility of full recovery is reduced to zero.

It was possible to completely disconnect the station from the Arctic on the island. Bolshevik. This station performs important tasks for the comprehensive study of the natural environment of the high-latitude Arctic under changing climatic conditions. The station conducts research related to the atmosphere, ice cap, oceanographic, ecological, microbiological and ornithological research.

Data warehouses are also paralyzed — Storage Area Network (EMC VNX, PowerVault 4024, HPE MSA).

In total, more than 280 servers on the public network have been confirmed to have been completely destroyed. The total value of information lost as a result of a cyber operation can be at least more than $10 million, considering its uniqueness and long collection and generalization time. This does not take into account the physical damage to a number of critically important systems of the Far Eastern hub “Planet”, the report notes.

DC FSBU “NDC “Planeta” is the leading organization in the Far East in the operation and development of systems for observing the Earth from space. It is the largest of the three regional branches in the structure of the scientific research center of the Russian Federation “Planet”. The main activity of the ground complex is the acquisition of data from Russian and foreign satellites. The main task is to provide Roshidromet, other ministries and institutions of Russia with operational materials of satellite images and thematic products for hydrometeorological, natural resource and oceanographic purposes.

“Planeta” works with more than 50 consumers of permanent remote sensing data. These include, first of all, units of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the General Staff, services of the Ministry of Emergencies of the Russian Federation, operational and scientific research organizations.
