The turmoil surrounding VMware following its acquisition by Broadcom is forcing Veeam to evaluate whether it can support Proxmox.

According to The Register, backup specialist Veeam is exploring the possibility of supporting VMware alternative Proxmox. The question has been raised in several forum posts among Veeam customers as Broadcom has made significant cuts to VMware since its acquisition. Among other things, Carbon Black was sold and one-off licenses were replaced with subscriptions.

Small resellers and their customers are then considered “collateral damage”. This fickleness is forcing Veeam to look for alternatives. “We’re researching and prototyping Proxmox to see what’s possible there in terms of backup,” says Anton Gostev, senior VP of product management at Veeam.

In addition to Proxmox, Oracle Linux KVM is also presented in the various forum contributions. At first glance, this seems to be a direct continuation of Red Hat Virtualization. Veeam has already announced in an official response that the next update of RHV will include support for Oracle Linux KVM, including the new name change.

So the predicted exodus of VMware customers appears to be coming true, thanks in part to the actions of Broadcom itself. Competitors like Nutanix are happy about this.
