The Electron launch vehicle launched at 9.34am Kiev time from the spaceport on the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand.
The payload is for customer Spire Global Inc., which is building and operating them for its customer NorthStar Earth & Space. It consisted of four Low Earth Multi-Purpose Receiver (LEMUR) mini satellites launched on behalf of.
Four 16U spacecraft, each weighing six kilograms, are said to be built by Spire “to provide space-based weather monitoring as well as maritime and aviation tracking.”
The NorthStar Earth & Space satellite constellation is planned to eventually consist of 12 satellites. Eight more will be launched in blocks of four with two Electron launch vehicles later this year.
The mission, called Four of a Kind, was Rocket Lab’s first mission of the new year.
As Ukrinform reported, on Friday, December 15, the Rocket Lab company successfully launched the Japanese Tsukuyomi-1 satellite into space.
