Passkey support is now fully integrated into Google Pixel smartphones. Google’s built-in password manager helps you find accounts for which you can enable passkeys.

Google is one of the driving forces behind the introduction of passkeys. You’ve been able to secure your Google account with the digital key for a few months now, but Google also wants to help you add a digital key to your other accounts. In a blog, Google announces adjustments to how it will embed passkeys deeper into the Android operating system, starting with its own Pixel smartphones.

You can store your passkeys in the built-in Google Password Manager. These are then stored locally on your smartphone and the password manager then passes them on when you log in somewhere. For websites that already support this login method, Google wants to make it easier to use passkeys. The password manager will search for accounts that you can protect with passkeys and redirect you to the page where you can do so.

This feature is rolling out to all Pixel smartphones up to and including the Pixel 5a. Google also wants to roll out the feature to “other platforms,” meaning other Android brands can also integrate this into their software layer. Participating websites include Adobe, DocuSign, PayPal and soon TikTok.

Passkeys in Android

Passkeys support is also integrated into Android 14 in another way with Credential Manager. The passkeys are ultimately intended to provide a more secure and convenient login method than passwords. More and more apps and software platforms are starting to support this, including Windows 11. It’s too early to give up all passwords now, but it seems only a matter of time.
