Thanks to the European Space Agency’s (ESA) XMM-Newton X-ray telescope, an international team of astronomers has been able to detect the superfast wind of a black hole in the Markarian 817 galaxy.
This was reported by Sci News, as reported by Ukrinform.
Inside every large galaxy is a supermassive black hole, whose immense gravity pulls gas from its surroundings. As this gas spirals into the black hole, it collects into a flat accretion disk around it, where it heats up and glows.
Over time, the gas closest to the black hole passes the “point of no return” and is absorbed by it.
However, black holes consume only a portion of the gas coming towards them. Around the black hole, some of the matter is ejected back into space, sometimes at such a high rate that it clears out the surrounding interstellar gas.
“In the galaxy we studied, called Markarian 817, the ‘fan’ was turned on at a lower power level, but was still producing incredible winds. “It is very rare to observe ultrafast winds, and even rarer to detect winds with enough energy to change the character of galaxies,” said University of Michigan astronomer Miranda Zack.
The fact that Markarian 817 has had these winds for about a year without being particularly active suggests that black holes can change the shape of their host galaxies much more than previously thought, according to University of Rome astronomer Tre.Elias Cammun.
Markarian 817 is a Seyfert 1 galaxy located approximately 430 million light-years away in the constellation Draco.
Also known as Mrk 817 or QSO J1436+5847, the galaxy contains an active supermassive black hole with a mass of 81 million solar masses.
An international group of astronomers has discovered a new type of star located near the center of our Milky Way galaxy, Ukrinform reports.
