Although the batteries that equip our mobile phones have improved significantly over the last decade as their sizes have increased, the industry looks to the future in search of new solutions This allows to maximize the autonomy of the devices. Recently, far from experiments that will never happen, such as graphite batteries, China boasts of an atomic battery that can last 50 years.

Although it’s a good start, it doesn’t seem realistically possible in the short term. But Honor surprised the world when it introduced its silicon-carbon battery. more autonomy occupying the same space. Now the second generation is coming with the launch of the new Honor Magic 6 Pro.

Silicon-carbon batteries return to the scene in Honor Magic 6 Pro

Over the last decade, lithium-ion batteries have taken over the insides of our devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, and even wearables. They offer good performance over other alternatives in aspects such as: energy density, efficiency and durabilitybut yes, they are far from perfect.

Honor Magic 6 Pro Battery

One of the main problems with these is that they have to stick with them. work in a not too wide temperature rangeThey also do not provide much energy per gram of weight. To alleviate this drawback, Honor has achieved greater energy density by replacing the graphite anode (commonly used in the batteries of our devices) with an anode made of silicon and carbon.

It is coming now the second generation of these strange batteries successor to the aforementioned smartphone. Honor claims that pure silicon anodes would be ideal. However, since they have an excessive expansion rate (up to 300%), it is not possible to use them in components of consumer products.

That’s why the Chinese manufacturer chose the second best option: silicon-carbon anode. Yes, it still contains graphite as a major component, but the addition of silicon ensures the chemical structure is stable. This was the battery of the Honor Magic 5 Pro, but unfortunately it was only available in models released in its home country.

Honor Magic 6 Pro continues to work in the same direction, but this time it adds an E1 control chip that will give a more accurate estimate of the charge level than other phones. In addition, capacity increases thanks to the higher energy density of the structure. 5.600mAh without needing to increase its size.

As if this were not enough, there is also an 80-watt fast charging feature developed by Honor to prevent the phone from overheating. This allows you to charge the battery from the charger. 0 to 100% in less than 40 minutes. For now, this handset has been introduced in China and is expected to arrive in Europe at MWC 2024; but we don’t yet know if units with revolutionary batteries are available worldwide.

But we do have a global model that includes them: the foldable Honor Magic V2, which we loved when it was in our test lab. Even so, the manufacturer keep betting on this silicon-carbon anodeSo perhaps we will see future generations of these batteries, which will always be welcome as technology advances.
