The tablet market is also having a difficult time. Covid caused a sharp peak in tablet shipments in 2020, after which there was a downward trend again. According to Canalys, this trend will continue in 2023 with a decrease of 10.2 percent compared to 2022.
Huawei (+32.1%) had a bad year, Amazon (-42.9%) suffered a severe blow. Apple (-11%), Samsung (-11.5%) and Lenovo (-19.4%) are also having a hard time. In the case of Apple, this is mainly due to the fact that, exceptionally, no new iPad will come onto the market in 2023. Traditionally, a new model always provides a boost.
Canalys expects little improvement for 2024. While PC and smartphone sales will increase in 2024 thanks to AI, AI announcements in the tablet market remain quiet. Nowadays it is primarily the Asian market that ensures high tablet sales, otherwise the numbers would be significantly lower.
The number of tablets shipped has been declining for some time. The trend has been visible since 2016. Covid was able to mask further decline for a while, but in 2023 we are now at almost the same low point as 2019.
