Researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast (Queensland, Australia) managed to photograph one of the most unusual dolphins in the world. While sailing on a research ship, scientists spotted a spotted black-and-white dolphin. He jumped out of the water next to their boat at Harvey Bay, 10 miles from Scarness Beach.
After studying the scientific literature, scientists discovered that such abundant dolphins are extremely rare: only 24 individuals were recorded in the entire history of sightings. Supporting photographs are available for only six cases; these were shot in Mexico, the Black Sea, the coast of Brazil and the Strait of Gibraltar. The dolphin spotted in Queensland became only the second dolphin documented in the Southern Hemisphere.
After examining the aquatic mammal swimming around five other individuals, scientists concluded that its pigmentation was not caused by any disease or sunburn.
