The establishment stated on social network X:

The investigation reveals that every crime committed by every member of the gang had to be ordered and approved by the leaders. Prosecutors will ensure that these criminals pay for the suffering they have inflicted on Salvadorans for decades.

Among those charged are 24 of the group’s historical leaders, and some have asked to be extradited to the United States. The charges against them are aggravated murders, disappearances, extortion, arms trafficking, human and drug trafficking, and acts of terrorism and insurrection.

The trial, which authorities believe could last up to a year, will be settled in the sixth organized crime court.

The hearing, which began on Thursday, will take place virtual and simultaneous in different prisons where alleged criminals are being held, some for years, and others detained during the state of emergency.

In January, the Minister of Security Gustavo Villatorostated that this process would only cover the heads of the Mara Salvatrucha structure, and not members or lower-ranking employees, and that it would “smallest in quantity” which the authorities were going to carry out as part of the fight against these groups.

Under the current emergency regime, which suspends several constitutional guarantees and has been criticized by human rights groups, more than 75,000 suspected gang members have been arrested and murders and other crimes have fallen, according to official data.

Bukele’s tough and controversial internal security strategy had created high popularity ratings for the presidentwho was re-elected to power on Sunday in an election in which he won an overwhelming victory, with more than 80% of the votes.
